Romans 5-7 Week 5 – Dead to the Law

Dave Riddle – 2/11/2018

Key passage: Romans 7:1-6

Reminder:

  • Romans 6:14
    • Not under the law…

A simple and straightforward truism:

  • Truism = statement of truth
  • Romans 7:1
    • Law is only binding for the living.

A real-life analogy: marriage

  • Romans 7:2-3
    • An analogy, not a teaching on divorce or marriage.

Relevance for the believer :

  • Set free from the law
    • Romans 7:4
      • thanatoō (Greek: θανατω) – put to death, by death to be liberated from the bond of anything, literally to be made dead in relation to the law.
  • Attached to Jesus
    • Romans 7:4
  • Bearing Spiritual Fruit
    • Romans 7:5
    • Ephesians 2:8-10
      • By grace through faith, not by works, but created to do good works.
    • Total transformation!
      • We’ve been made new so now we produce a different kind of fruit.
  • Serving in the Spirit
    • Romans 7:6
    • A necessary byproduct of our salvation.
    • douleuō (Greek: δουλεω) – to be a slave, serve, do service
