New Song Devo: Yes I Will

I think every one of us could identify a time when we’ve walked through a valley. I’m not talking about a physical space between physical mountains (though that can be quite the experience!), but valley of the soul – a season of struggle. We all encounter difficult circumstances: a health diagnosis, financial challenges, concern for or loss of a loved one, a global pandemic, etc. But I would argue that what makes the valley is not the circumstances themselves, but by the emotions they cause: fear, worry, doubt, despair, grief, abandonment to name a few.

I have found great comfort in the promises of Scripture as I’ve traveled different valleys in my life, especially in the Psalms. Promises like “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for You are with me” (Ps. 23:4), “why my soul are you downcast?...put your hope in God” (Ps. 42:5), and “I waited patiently for the Lord…He lifted me out of the slimy pit…and set my feet upon the rock” (Ps. 40:1-2). I also remember the promise in the early verses of James 1 that the testing of our faith develops perseverance.

I love that the song “Yes I Will” offers us a choice. The choice to praise God when things are hard, when we don’t understand, when the WHY goes unanswered. We can choose to acknowledge that God has always been and will always be good, perfect, and sovereign, holding all things together. And when we make that choice to ascribe worth to God because of who He is and what He’s done, even when our hearts are heavy, our worship begins to bring healing – not just to us, but to those around us as well.

As we look forward to worshiping together on Sunday, I hope you’ll take some time to listen to the song “Yes I Will” and meditate on the lyrics and Scripture passages below as you prepare personally to worship corporately.

Yes I Will

I count on one thing

The same God that never fails

Will not fail me now

You won't fail me now

In the waiting

The same God who's never late

Is working all things out

You're working all things out

Yes I will lift You high

In the lowest valley

Yes I will bless Your name

Yes I will sing for joy

When my heart is heavy

All my days yes I will

I choose to praise

To glorify glorify

The name of all names

That nothing can stand against

Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For the Lord your God is the one who will go with you; he will not leave you or abandon you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 (CSB)

The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need.
He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters.
He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.
Psalm 23 (CSB)

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever.
Psalm 73:26 (CSB)

Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
James 1:2-4 (CSB)
