7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. (1 John 4:7-12)
This past Sunday we introduced a song that celebrates the character of God with the title, “God is Love.” It is a strong reminder of the perfect love of God, and a reminder is often what we need.
How easy it is to fall into the patterns and fears of this world – to forget the love of God, or at least to forget its magnitude. His love is BIG. REALLY BIG.
Our sin is big too. This is often something we don’t like to think about, but it’s important to remember that the sin of mankind warranted the unfathomable sacrifice of Jesus. Each one of us deserves death for the sins that we have committed. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23)
That’s right folks: the love of God, shown most perfectly in the sacrifice of his son, has removed the weight and debt of sin, has put us in right standing with our creator, and has made an eternity in heaven a possibility. Not just a possibility, but a reality for all who put their faith and trust in Jesus.
That’s what I call a big love.
Brothers and sisters, I am overjoyed to share this song with you. When we get to the bridge section and join as a community of Christ-followers in loud and fervent acknowledgment of the perfect love of our perfect king, it’s a beautiful moment.
In that moment we are praising our God for His love and reminding ourselves and one another of its magnitude. I invite you to come prepared for this moment, and to consider it an act of love to both God and one another.
I know my God is love
I know my God is love
This is enough to know my God is love
God Is Love
How great this love
Oh it's moving all my mountains
This perfect love it's casting out my fear
How great this love
Oh it welcomes me like family
And anywhere I go it meets me there
He is good and He is God
What I earned it's not what I got
And He is just yet oh so kind
What I deserve it's not what I find
What more could I say about Him
My God is love
How great this love
Oh it's faithful through my failures
This trusted love is with me 'til the end
How great this love
Oh it's closer than a brother
This is love He died so I could live
I know my God is love
I know my God is love
This is enough to know my God is love
