Key Passage: Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus’ Rough Day

• Jesus sends out the disciples.

• The Disciples return with news of the death of John the Baptist.

  • His cousin has been beheaded

• The feeding of the five thousand.

• Jesus sends the disciples away in the boat and dismisses the crowds

  • Putting the kids to bed and doing some house work.

• Jesus went to pray. He went to the Father to recharge.

• He walks on the water.
  

Peter: “Lord, if it’s you, call me to come out onto the water”

• your ways are better than mine…

• When Peter practiced obedience to Jesus, Jesus responded with “come”.
  

Matthew 11:28 - “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

When those in the boat saw Peter’s obedience and Jesus’ response they were deeply impacted.

• Matthew 14:33 - Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
  

God is good despite our weakness and foolishness.

Why this subject?

• God hasn’t called you to run a sprint he called you to run a marathon

  • Filling your emotional tank sets you up for a long race

• 1 in 4 young adults 18-24 contemplated suicide.

  • 28% of US adults suffering with depression.

• Proverbs 19:8 - he who gets wisdom loves his own soul.

  • We have a responsibility to tend to our own soul/emotional well-being.

Matthew 11:28-30

• ...I will give you rest...

We can’t give what we don’t have

• you can’t run if you don’t have fuel

We are emotional beings 

• Our emotions need attention

We have three emotional indicators

• Our Pace (Schedule)

  • Your value to God has nothing to do with how busy you are...

  • Both laziness and workaholism will run you into a ditch

  • Work hard and know when to take your foot off the gas.

• Our People (Friendships)

  • Solitude is only good in small doses

  • Solitude leads to isolation and isolation leads to a multitude of negative results including depression.

  • There is no pill for loneliness.

  • Make room for replenishing relationships in your life!

• Our Plan (Emotional Maintenance Plan)

  • 1. Laughter - why are Christians always so serious? Lighten up!

    • Proverbs 17:22 - a cheerful heart is good medicine.

• 2. Exercise

  • 1 Timothy 4:8 - we interpret this as “physical training is of no value” when it says “of some value”

• 3. Distraction

  • You need something that lets you pivot and catch your breath.

  • Even our perfect God rested between the days of creation and afterwards!

  • Find a hobby!

• 4. Sleep

  • Sleep is not a disposable commodity.

  • Sleep deprived Christians can’t run the race God has called them to run.

Mark 6:30-32

• “Come with me to a quiet place and get some rest”

• Next time you read the gospels take notice of how many times Jesus got away to rest.

If your tank is full

• Thank God everyday!

• Educate yourself so you can stay well

• Educate yourself so you can understand those who are struggling.

If your tank is running on empty

• There is hope for you.

• Anxiety and depression are not the last chapter in your story

  • Make an appointment with your doctor

  • Make an appointment with a Christian counselor

Prince of Peace

• Shalom: a very broad term that means health, security, tranquility, good condition, success, comfort and more. An unconcerned state of peacefulness.

  • Matthew 10:34-39 - do not suppose that I have come to bring peace...

    • Jesus is our number one priority, and that will lead to division.

• eirene: a national state of tranquility, harmony, and safety. In a Christian context: the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation

Confidence

• John 16:33 - you are going to have suffering, but you can have confidence because Jesus has conquered the world!

Rest

• Matthew 11:29 - Take up my yoke and you will find rest.

(Re)Connection

• Romans 5:1 - since we have been justified we have peace with God through Jesus.

Invitation (A Gift)

• John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.

• Philippians 4:7 - peace that surpasses all understanding.

Challenge (A Calling)

• Colossians 3:15 - let the peace of Christ rule in your heart, as members of one body you were called to peace.

• Romans 12:18 - as much as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

• Hebrews 12:14 - pursue peace with everyone.

Orientation (A Fruit) 

• Galatians 5:22-23 - peace is a fruit of the Spirit, not something we can create or attain on our own.

sar (Hebrew: שַׂר) - a captain, master, chief, ruler, commander, leader, or prince. A person of nobility or rank. 

• used over 380x in the Hebrew Bible, to refer to various types of government or religious officials, rulers of cities, etc.

  • see also: czar, tsar, caesar

• Not just a prince over us, but a prince with us.

shalowm (Hebrew: שָׁלוֹם) - a very broad term that means health, security, tranquility, good condition, success, comfort, and more. 

• it has layers of meaning related to peace.

• Widely used in the Hebrew Bible, shalowm clearly depicts a satisfied condition, an unconcerned state of peacefulness. 

Peace Brings Confidence

• John 16:33

  • You will have suffering in this world, but be courageous because Jesus has conquered the world!

Peace Brings Rest

• Matthew 11:29

  • ...you will find rest for your souls.

Peace Brings Reconciliation

• Romans 5:1

  • Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God.

Peace is a Gift

• John 14:27 (HCSB): Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.
