You may have heard “Hope is not a strategy”

  • There is some truth to that popular saying.

    • But hope IS an essential part of our faith.

      • 1 Corinthians 13:13

      • Hebrews 11:1-3

      • Romans 15:13

We Believe

  • We are people of faith.

    • John 3:14-16

    • Ephesians 2:8-9

      • Saved by faith though grace.

    • Romans 5:1-2

      • Faith and hope

We often struggle to live by faith

  • So often, we walk by what we see, know, and feel, rather than walking by faith.

    • Galatians 2:20

    • 2 Corinthians 5:7

      • walk = peripateo (Greek: περιπατέω) literally: to tread all around, walk at large. Figuratively: to live, to make one’s way, to regulate one’s life, to conduct oneself

      • Are you living in a manner consistent with your confident belief in God’s promises?

    • 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

      • We do not focus on what is seen!

On what our whom do you set your eyes?

  • What/who are you chasing?

  • Are we people who live by faith?

  • The overlap between the heavenly and earthly realms

  • Isaiah’s response to a holy God.

Who is King Uzziah?

  • Uzziah was a pretty good King, but the people of his time were not! 

    • 2 Chronicles 27

Who/What are the Seraphim?

  • Isaiah 6:2

    • The burning ones

  • Numbers 21

    • venomous snakes

  • Ezekiel 10, Revelation 4

    • Other passages that depict similarly strange heavenly creatures 

Shaking and Smoke?

  • Isaiah 6:4

    • The building shakes but doesn’t break at the voices of these beings

    • Both of these things point to God’s glory.

What do we learn about God from this story?

What did Isaiah experience?

  • He saw

    • A high and lofty throne

    • His robe filled the temple

  • He heard

    • Holy Holy Holy

      • Supremely and completely

  • He felt 

    • The shaking

  • He smelled

    • The smoke

A Special Name of God

  • Yahweh Sabaoth

    • Lord of Hosts

    • Lord Almighty

    • Lord of Heaven’s Armies

  • Also seen in Psalm 46

    • This name reminds us of God’s protection. He’s there when we call out in times of need.

What do we learn about people from this story?

  • Isaiah 6:5 - Isaiah’s response to seeing God is complete humility.

    • He is overwhelmed and undone.

  • Isaiah is completely dependent on God’s grace and mercy 

    • Romans 5:6

  • Isaiah doesn’t reject God, He receives God’s gift.

Undivided in our relationship with God 

Declared Righteous

  • Romans 5:1

  • Our sin separates us from God

    • But we have been declared righteous!

  • Romans 5:9

    • Not by our own action, but by His blood.

Peace With God!

  • Romans 5:1 - Peace

    • …we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    • Peace = eirēnē (Greek: εἰρήνη) - a state of tranquility, harmony, and safety. In a Christian context: the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation.

  • Colossians 1:19 - 20

    • Peace through His sacrifice on the cross.

  • Peace with each other is impossible if we don’t first have peace with God.

By God’s Grace

  • Romans 5:2

Rejoice 

  • Romans 5:2b-4

    • Rejoice in the hope

    • Rejoice in our afflictions

Even when it’s hard

  • To the Rich Young Ruler: “you lack one thing” …it was the only thing.

    • Take up your cross and follow Jesus.

    • Overflows, gushes!

      • Do we respond in kind?

Isaiah 9:6 - Prince of Peace

  • Peace = shalowm (Hebrew: שָׁלוֹם) - a very broad term that means health, security, tranquility, good condition, success, comfort, and more.

    • it has layers of meaning related to peace.

    • Widely used in the Hebrew Bible, shalowm clearly depicts a satisfied condition, an unconcerned state of peacefulness.

Luke 2:13 – 14 - Peace on Earth

  • Peace = eirēnē (Greek: εἰρήνη) - a state of tranquility, harmony, and safety. In a Christian context: the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation.

  • Peace with God Himself

Confidence

  • John 16:33

    • Peaceful confidence provides escape from anger, worry…

Rest

      • zōē (ζωή): life

      • perissos (περισσός): life to the fullest! superabundant or superior. Exceeding some number, measure, or rank. Over and above. More than necessary. Extraordinary. Excellent.

John 5:25 - …and those who hear will live

1 Corinthians 15:54 - …Death has been swallowed up in victory. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?

Prince of Peace

  • Shalom: a very broad term that means health, security, tranquility, good condition, success, comfort and more. An unconcerned state of peacefulness.

    • Matthew 10:34-39 - do not suppose that I have come to bring peace...

      • Jesus is our number one priority, and that will lead to division.

  • eirene: a national state of tranquility, harmony, and safety. In a Christian context: the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation

Confidence

  • John 16:33 - you are going to have suffering, but you can have confidence because Jesus has conquered the world!

Rest

  • Matthew 11:29 - Take up my yoke and you will find rest.

(Re)Connection

  • Romans 5:1 - since we have been justified we have peace with God through Jesus.

Invitation (A Gift)

  • John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.

  • Philippians 4:7 - peace that surpasses all understanding.

Challenge (A Calling)

  • Colossians 3:15 - let the peace of Christ rule in your heart, as members of one body you were called to peace.

  • Romans 12:18 - as much as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

  • Hebrews 12:14 - pursue peace with everyone.

Orientation (A Fruit) 

  • Galatians 5:22-23 - peace is a fruit of the Spirit, not something we can create or attain on our own.

sar (Hebrew: שַׂר) - a captain, master, chief, ruler, commander, leader, or prince. A person of nobility or rank. 

  • used over 380x in the Hebrew Bible, to refer to various types of government or religious officials, rulers of cities, etc.

    • see also: czar, tsar, caesar

  • Not just a prince over us, but a prince with us.
